Those are some pretty awful odds on which to base your financial future, at least without a safety-net in place. A Prenup provides that safety-net.
If I learned anything during my 20 years as a divorce lawyer, it's that ending a marriage is painful enough without adding financial implosion to the mix.
You want to know what makes divorce so nasty and expensive? Arguing over STUFF. It's extremely difficult to divide marital assets like the family home, bank accounts, and retirement plans, plus come to agreement about alimony when emotions are raw.
If you also add child custody and support issues to the mix, it's like adding gasoline to a fire -- one that you'll pay a lawyer several thousands dollars to put out. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY.
I think the very best way to look at a prenup is to think of it as a type of extended warranty for your marriage. For real. After all, what's more likely to go haywire than human relationships?
If your marriage cruises along successfully 'til death do you part and you never need to use the Prenup, great! No harm, no foul.
But just in case you do need to part ways, you'll be very glad you have a Prenup tucked away to help smooth the transition for both of you.
